Surface hyperthermia in Männedorf
Expansion of collaboration with Radiotherapie Hirslanden Männedorf

The ZIO is now offering surface hyperthermia treatments at Radiotherapie Hirslanden Männedorf. "The collaboration between the ZIO and Radiotherapie Hirslanden enables patients to receive the optimal combination of heat and radiotherapy," says Dr. Boris Hübenthal, Medical Director of the ZIO. With surface hyperthermia, it is important that there are only a few minutes between the radiotherapy and the heat therapy. This is now possible at Radiotherapie Hirslanden Männedorf. This combination can be very helpful, especially for patients with tumors of the thoracic wall, skin carcinomas or superficial sarcomas. Even in the case of relapses, a new, gentle radiation treatment is possible.
The hyperthermia opening aperitif took place on September 5 at Radiotherapie Hirslanden Männedorf. "We demonstrated on site how hyperthermia works and presented the collaboration," says Hübenthal. He is pleased that the ZIO can now offer practically all forms of hyperthermia thanks to this cooperation.

Psycho-oncological counseling
"Those affected can put everything on the table here"

Cancer presents people with major challenges. In addition to any symptoms and treatment, there are also existential questions. What does this illness mean for my life? For my identity? How can I talk to family and friends about my illness and how do I organize my life during this phase? "In a situation like this, it's important to have the opportunity to talk openly with someone," says Jonathan Pfister. He works as a psychological counselor at the ZIO Zurich. "In counseling, patients can be ruthlessly honest and put everything on the table without straining the relationship with the person they are talking to - this is naturally less the case in friendships or families." Patients' loved ones are also affected and under great strain. "It is just as important for them to have the opportunity to talk openly. Our service is also intended for them," says Pfister. He emphasizes: "This also applies to patients' children. It is very important to me that they are not left alone." During the consultation, Pfister talks to those affected about their own values. What is important to them? Where do they place their personal focus in this phase of life? What offers them prospects? "Together, we find out how those affected can deal with the illness individually," says Pfister.

The ZIO partner BrustCentrum is newly certified
Integrative breast cancer treatment at the highest level

In our last newsletter, we reported on the new partnership between ZIO and the BreastCenter Zurich at Zollikerberg Hospital and the Bethanien Private Clinic in Zurich. Over the past few months, the BreastCenter has received a visit from auditors: The center was freshly recertified and now holds current quality awards from both the German Cancer Society DKG and the Swiss Cancer League. The head oncologist at the ZIO Zurich, Dr. Valeria Milani, explained in detail what such certification means and what exactly it means for patients at the ZIO.

Helping when it is needed
Team of nutritionists expanded

"We want to be able to provide advice as soon as symptoms appear or new questions arise," says Jelina Linder, "and not just when the next regular appointment is due." The ZIO, where Linder is head of nutritional advice, has achieved this goal with the latest addition to the team. The ZIO has been offering nutritional advice for two years, and Alicia Lopez and Tina Bosshard joined the team in June. Together, the three experts, who each work part-time for the ZIO, cover the entire week at the Zurich location, while someone is on site two days a week in Winterthur. This means that not only are face-to-face consultations possible every day, but also spontaneous help over the phone.
